Every electrical appliance contains numerous conductors and cables, the safety of which is of great importance. Damage to these can cause dangerous situations for people and animals and, in the worst case, lead to serious injuries.

The insulation of the conductors plays a particularly important role here. It usually consists of an insulating layer and covers the conductive parts of an appliance. Before products are placed on the market, it is therefore necessary to check whether this insulation is intact. This is done using modern measuring and testing technology.

The condition of the insulation can be checked using an insulation resistance meter. The insulation resistance measurement is carried out with protection class I and II devices. It is particularly important for appliances in protection class II, as these do not have a protective conductor that could cause a leakage current to earth in the event of a fault. Touching an appliance with damaged insulation can be life-threatening.

What is an insulation resistance measurement?

Insulation resistance measurement evaluates the pure active resistance component of an insulation. A DC voltage of 500 V is usually used as the test voltage, which is applied between active and non-active parts of the test object. The applicable limit values are usually in the range 1 ... 100 MΩ.

Insulation resistance measurement on insulating materials as well as on electrical devices and equipment evaluates the pure active resistance component of an insulation. Insulation faults can cause leakage currents which can endanger the operator. For protection class II devices in particular, but also for other protection classes, the test ensures that the measurement results are within the permissible range.

Measurement also plays an important role when carrying out repeat tests. In material testing of insulating materials (e.g. in the solar industry), the test can also provide important information about the quality of the manufacturing process.
